The "right" answer depends on multiple factors — and an honest technician should be willing to tell you when replacement makes more sense than repair, even if it means losing a repair job. The 50% Rule A widely used guideline in the repair industry: if the cost of repair exceeds 50% of the replacement value of the machine, replacement is generally the better option. For example, if a repair costs R2,000 and an equivalent refurbished laptop costs R4,000, the repair is borderline. If the repair costs R3,500, replacement is clearly better value.
